3 guys were seriously hurt Tuesday afternoon by a surge at a Santa Clarita commercial park that also triggered a small brush fire, authorities stated.
A fourth man hurt in the blast had driven himself to a healthcare facility emergency clinic, however the level of his wounds was not known, stated Jonathan Matheny, a representative for Los Angeles County fire.
Since late Tuesday evening, the three seriously burned males were expected to make it through, Matheny said.
The area of the explosion had previously been described as a motion picture set, though county fire authorities and sheriff’s investigators later figured out there was no proof of recording throughout the event, describing the blast as an “commercial accident.”
Authorities received calls around 4:45 p.m. about the explosion on the 2500 block of Rye Canyon Loop, a commercial and residential area, said Supervising Dispatcher Martin Rangel with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Fire paramedics hospitalized three clients with critical burn injuries, Rangel said.
Minutes later, callers also reported seeing smoke on a close-by hillside, Rangel stated. County fire teams discovered a 1/4-acre of flames burning uphill, however had the ability to stop the fire’s spread at one acre.
Flames showed up from houses located at the foot of the hill, according to videos taken by citizens and published to social media. County fire helicopters flew overhead to drop water onto the fire.
The blast itself occurred nearby to a service that held a series of large metal storage containers and semi-truck trailers, Matheny said. Sheriff’s bomb squad private investigators and fire crews stayed on scene up until late Tuesday evening.
The scenarios of what set off the explosion and the relationship between the wounded men and the business were not instantly clear.
Investigators identified the point of ignition, where the brush fire started, was at least 100 feet far from the blast site, Matheny stated.
” So whatever and wherever it happened, by it sparking a brush fire over 100 feet away, that was some sort of powerful force,” Matheny stated.
The preliminary reports that had suggested the blast had taken place on a film set might have been false information relayed to dispatchers, amongst the more than 50 require this event, Matheny stated.
” There is no proof that leads us to believe it was a film set, or there was any movie shoot,” he said.
The industrial park on Rye Canyon Loop is house to a large assortment of businesses such as biotech facilities, a veterinary school, a Recreational Vehicle storage lot, and a brewery.
